SEASONAL ALLERGIC RHINITIS

Seasonal allergic rhinitis, also known as "hay fever" affects many people in Central Indiana and the surrounding world. Many airborne allergens including pollens from trees, grasses, and weeds, and spores from molds can cause allergic symptoms. We can expect weed pollen counts to rise in mid-August, and mold spores to rise after the leaves begin to fall in the Autumn.

Symptoms of Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis

  • Runny nose, congestion, sneezing
  • Itching of the eyes, throat, nose, or roof of the mouth
  • Watery or red eyes

Treatment

If the symptoms are severe enough to warrant treatment, there are a number of options. First and easiest are the over-the-counter (OTC) antihistamines. These include Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and Chlortrimeton (chlorpheniramine). These are available in a number of formulations, including liquid. They may cause drowsiness. Your physician may prescribe prescription antihistamines, steroid nasal sprays or decongestants to help control your symptoms. For severe allergic rhinitis, or allergies complicated by recurrent sinus infections or asthma, we might need to refer your child to an Allergist, a doctor who specializes in treating allergies. Allergists can help symptoms by prescribing immunotherapy, or shots that may help to prevent or decrease allergic reactions.

Prevention

The best way to treat seasonal allergic rhinitis is to prevent attacks by reducing exposure to allergens. There are several ways to reduce exposure:

  • Keep windows and doors closed and air conditioning on at home and in the car during allergy season. Avoid using attic and window fans that draw in outside air.
  • Run a dehumidifier to keep humidity low.
  • Stay indoors when possible and minimize outdoor activity during peak pollen periods.
  • Avoid mowing the lawn and raking leaves, and avoid contact with freshly cut grass.
  • Shower or bathe and change clothing after outdoor activities.
  • Dry clothes in a vented dryer: do not hang clothes outside to dry.
